National Pet ID Week

Did you know that National Pet ID week starts tomorrow, April 16th? This is a wonderful cause, and one that we are happy to spread awareness about. Every year, as many as ten million pets go missing. In fact, one in three pets will get lost at some point during their lives. Making sure your four-legged pal has proper ID is very important! Read on as a local Minnetonka, MN vet offers tips on your pet’s ID.

Microchip

Getting your pet microchipped is one of the best ways to protect your beloved furry friend! A microchip is a tiny device that is implanted beneath pets’ skin, usually between the shoulder blades. The chip contains a specific ID number, which can be read with special scanners. Because that ID number correlates to your records in the manufacturer’s database, these tiny devices form a permanent link between you and your pet. The procedure is a very simple process that only takes a few moments, and is very much like getting a shot. Once your pet is chipped, you’ll need to make sure that your records are current. The chip won’t work if your contact information is missing or outdated. (Tip: if your pet is chipped, try using the AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Lookup, which can be found here.) Ask your vet for more information.

ID tags

Is your pet microchipped? If so, that’s great! However, it is still important to make sure your four-legged friend is wearing ID tags. If your furry pal runs off, those tags are still the easiest way for someone to contact you if they find your little wanderer. (It’s also worth noting that tags are actually required by law in many places.) If you are concerned that your furball could get his or her collar snagged on something, ask your vet for advice on using a breakaway collar.

Traveling

If you are traveling with your furry buddy, you’ll want to take a few extra precautions. Make sure that your pet’s carrier has your contact information. You can use a luggage tag or an address sticker. Just make sure that it cannot wear off. Ask your vet for more tips about traveling with pets.
