Keeping Your Cat Home Alone

Does your kitty stay home alone while you go off to work? Cats are very independent, and can do just fine by themselves during the day. As you probably know, Fluffy will likely spend a good chunk of her alone time sleeping. However, it’s still important to make sure that your kitty stays comfy, safe, and entertained while you are out. Here, a Minnetonka, MN vet discusses leaving your feline pal home alone.

Cats are very curious little furballs, and have quite a knack for getting into mischief. Remove or secure anything potentially dangerous. Some of the things you’ll want to address include toxic plants; plastic bags and wrappers; small or sharp objects; medicine; and household chemicals, such as cleaning agents and automotive products. You’ll also want to take care of wires, cords, and anything else that could entangle your pet, such as string toys.

Make sure that Fluffy has enough food and water to last until you get back. It’s also important to keep your pet’s litterbox clean. If you’ll be gone overnight or longer, have a friend or family member stop in to check on your furball, or consider boarding her. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Kitty Comforts

Small touches can go a long way towards keeping Fluffy happy and comfy. Make sure your furball has lots of beds and napping spots to choose from. If you will be out after dark, leave a light on. Sitting in a dark house is no more fun for Fluffy than it is for you! Don’t forget about climate control: you don’t want your furry pal getting too hot or too cold. Last but not least, leave a radio or TV on. This will help keep your kitty from feeling lonely.

Kitties can get bored and unhappy if they have nothing to do but stare at the walls. Offer your furball plenty of fun toys to play with. Fluffy will also appreciate having a comfortable window seat. If possible, make your feline buddy a comfy bed before a window with a good view, so she can watch birds and squirrels. Your furball will also benefit from having cat furniture, like a pet tent or cat tower.
