Keeping Your Kitty Fit

Do you have a frisky, playful cat? Or do you have a furry, purring couch potato? While most kitties are tiny, adorable little bundles of energy when they’re young, they usually slow down—in some cases, way down—as they age, and become more interested in naps than mischief. Sleeping cats are definitely cute, but all those naps do make it easy for Fluffy to gain weight. Read on as a Minnetonka, MN vet offers tips on keeping your cat fit.

Toys

Playing is not just fun for Fluffy: it’s also a great way for her to keep fit. Keep your kitty’s toy box full! Cats all have their own individual tastes, so give your furry little diva a variety of playthings to choose from. Also, change your pet’s toys out regularly, so she doesn’t get bored with them. (Tip: if you toss one of your feline friend’s toys down the hall, there’s a pretty good chance that she’ll run after it. Some kitties even like playing fetch!)

Furniture

Cat furniture can also keep your furball moving. Look for a cat tower or activity center that will encourage Fluffy to climb, jump, and play. If your kitty likes heights, offer her some wall-mounted furniture.

Playtime

One of your most important official duties as a cat owner is keeping your pet properly entertained. Spend a few minutes a day dangling a feather toy in front of Fluffy, or holding a laser pointer for her to chase. This will be fun for both of you!

Catnip

Another way to get your sleepy pet off the couch is to offer her some catnip. While some felines are immune to catnip, many of them absolutely love it. You also get the bonus of free entertainment: the silly antics of a playful kitty under the effects of catnip can be absolutely hilarious!

Buddies

Is Fluffy an only pet? If so, you may want to consider getting her a buddy to play with. Adopting a cat is a lifelong commitment, though, so be sure to think things through before making a decision. The age, temperament, health, and history of both cats are all important things to consider, as are your finances and lifestyle. Ask your vet for advice.
