Fido’s Furry Feet

Does your dog sometimes put a paw on your leg when he wants a walk? This charming habit is only one the adorable mannerisms that have helped Fido earn such a special place in our hearts and homes. Your pet’s furry feet are not only super cute, they’re also very important. Without his paws, your cute pet couldn’t jump to greet you at the door, or run after his favorite toy. Caring for your pet’s paws isn’t difficult, but it is very important. Read on as a Minnetonka, MN vet discusses doggy paw care.

Nail Trims

Be sure to keep Fido’s nails clipped! This small detail is very important. Overgrown nails can be very uncomfortable for our canine companions. Your pup may change his stride to avoid discomfort, which puts a lot of additional stress on his bones and joints. If you are nervous about giving your pet a pawdicure, consider getting clippers that are equipped with sensors. These will take the guesswork out of the process, as they indicate just where to cut. You can also just call us to schedule a quick nail trim for your furry buddy.

Paw Pads

Fido’s paw pads are very delicate. In summer, your furry friend can get painful blisters or abrasions by running around on hot surfaces, like tar, sand, or gravel. Take extra care after your pet has been swimming, as your pup’s skin will be even more delicate after being immersed in water. In winter, snow, salt, sand, and ice can all hurt your canine buddy’s feet. If your pooch won’t go for wearing booties, try to keep him on solid ground as much as you can. We also recommend using paw balm or wax to protect your dog’s paw pads, and getting pet-safe deicing products.

Injuries

Get into the habit of regularly checking Fido’s paws. You’ll want to check between your pet’s toes for ticks and/or foreign objects, like pebbles, that could be stuck between them. Also, look for obvious signs of injury, such as swelling, heat, or bleeding. You can treat a small nick yourself with antiseptic, but contact your vet for anything more than that. Paw infections are definitely not something to play around with!
